80% is Good Enough

80% is Good Enough

You may have heard the saying “Bs get degrees”. This often infuriated the “A” students – I know this because my wife was one of them! But, many “A” students struggle at business and many “B” and even “C” students do well. Why is that?

In my opinion, the “A” student is more of a rule follower and more of a perfectionist. And a “B” or “C” student will typically not get caught up in the details and whether or not they know everything they need to know and instead, they will just act.

Action at 80% there is better than no action at 95% there.

100% complete isn’t possible. There will always be possible improvements and changes. By the time you attempt to make something perfect, you have already lost to the competition by not taking any action.

Speed Wins. Always!

A product launched and gaining traction is always preferred over a product still in development with promises of perfection. Overthinking will not help make the product better, just more complicated and slower. In my experience, it’s important to focus on no more than three things the product should do really well. The rest doesn’t matter.

Engagement always wins. Get out there and be a hard-working “B” student, not a really smart “A” student waiting for perfection before taking action.
