Always Look to the Future

Being a leader, you have to lead from behind. But, leading from behind doesn’t mean leading from the past. As a leader of a business, you have to lead your business into the future, not into the ground. That is tough when you are leading a large amount of people with many different experiences. It’s even harder if you are the youngest person in the room. If you are not always looking to the future in your business, it has an expiration date, and even worse a declining resale price. As a leader it is your job to take that leap of faith no matter how unpopular it is to help grow the company and take it into the next stage of business. This has been happening for decades. In the sign and graphic business, a similar change happened with full color digital printers. Many people were afraid that it would hurt the industry, and also had no place in a sign shop. People thought that it’s too expensive, too complicated, or that people wouldn’t buy the products. They were wrong. You wouldn’t dream about opening up a sign company without a digital printer now. We are seeing a similar revolution with online and digital technology. Facial recognition, voice search, data collection and many more are affecting not only my industry but all industries. How will you make sure you don’t get left behind in the next 10 years? How are you leading your team to see the importance of the changes? It’s the difference between growth or extinction.
