Conversational Tips and Tricks

Speaking with people is not something that is hard for me; in fact, the hard part is to stop talking in many cases! However, I know this is not the case for many – to the point where some people even dread having to hold a conversation. Although it comes naturally for me, there are a lot of things I was taught and had to work on to have truly meaningful conversations in the business community. Below are some tips and tricks I have picked up from many people over the years and I hope that these can be helpful to others as well.

• Repeat the person’s name multiple times throughout the conversation. This will help you remember the person’s name and be able to be more personal with them.

• Always make eye contact. Looking away or down breeds distrust, always look someone in the eye.

• Speak up. Don’t be afraid to talk; most people who are afraid to speak with strangers will speak softly. Show confidence in yourself and make sure others can hear you.

• Share a firm handshake . . . but not too firm. Don’t try to squeeze someone’s hand to death and don’t flop your hand into their hand either. Be firm and direct.

• Don’t jump right into business – you’ll come off like a used car salesman. Ask them how they are, where are they from, what sports team they like, etc. Make a personal connection before you make a business connection.

• Smile. You want to show people you are warm and inviting to talk to. Smile often – sometimes, this is hard but it’s worth the effort to send the message you are open to conversation.

These are simple tips and tricks that I am confident will help build a healthy conversation that will lead to great business relationships.
